About

Founding and Directors

The Requiem Choral Festival was founded in 2021 by husband-and-wife team Dr. Michael Accurso and his wife, Brenda. Both are graduates of the University of Notre Dame Sacred Music Program. Brenda holds a Master's degree and Michael earning both a Masters and a Doctorate in Choral Conducting.

We are passionate about bringing the sacred masterworks to sacred spaces, and creating opportunities for the community to experience the joy and pleasure of music making at the highest level.

COVID-19 Protocols: When the festival was scheduled and planned in June-July of 2021, we thought there would be no barriers to a full, normal festival. At this time, however, we ask that all participants wear either a mask or a face shield. We will be socially distancing between singers. It is not our policy to ask about vaccination status. We appreciate your understanding. Full refunds will be issued to anyone who wishes to receive one.

What is a Requiem?

The Latin word "Requiem" is drawn from the opening line historically sung at a traditional Catholic Funeral: "Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine." "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord." Composers throughout history have set the texts for a funeral Mass, and the title is drawn from this opening line. The most famous Catholic Requiems are by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Thomas Luis de Victoria, and Gabriel Faure. Requiems inspired by this traditional model include Johannes Brahms Deutches Requiem and the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten.

Why a Requiem?

Requiems are a fantastic lens through which to tour classical musical history. The music not only touches our hearts, it also gives expression to a subject that we often do not know how to talk about--death, grief, and loss. This festival creates a space for us to remember and pray for all our beloved dead, as well as grieve and celebrate together.
